Long Haul Expeditions (Up to 28 days)
Building Up To Departure
The build-up to the expedition is typically 18 months in duration. The build-up
gives the team plenty of time to cover all the training sessions run by
Wilderness Expertise; allows them to plan their itinerary and gives them
time to raise their expedition funds. Our aim is that the whole process
interferes as little as possible with their academic work.
During these 18 months, the team will take part in a raising funds seminar; complete a UK1 and UK2 training course with their Expedition Leader; plan their itinerary and in-country budget; hold a 'Meet the Leader' theme evening for parents; take part in a one-day Travelwise Health and Hygiene training course and run a 24-hour build-up the day before departure. Returning team members will all be sent a CD containing a Post-Expedition Report, a Personal Achievement Report, photos from the expedition and a Certificate of Achievement. A lot to cram into 18 months!
How Can Wilderness Expertise
support your Expedition?
There are eleven broad stages in the evolution of a successful expedition
and we provide close support throughout every stage. The whole process takes
approximately 18 months for a Long-Haul Expedition to allow time for itinerary
planning, choice of project, fund raising and training. This is the ideal
time period, but we are flexible and have been known to organise a trip
in as little as three weeks!
Wilderness Expertise will consider any expedition destination of your choice as long as it is safe to travel there (according to Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice, and the advice of local agents in the destination) and provides a quality developmental experience. Listed below are some of the more popular destinations:
- China
- Cambodia
- Borneo
- Peru
- Ecuador
- Mexico
- Costa Rica
- Kenya
- Ghana
- India

Long-haul Project based Expeditions
Wilderness Expertise has spent several years developing long-term links with project agents in Morocco, Ukraine, Iceland, Bulgaria, Romania and India. Although we’ve been guilty of it in the past – we don’t believe in the philosophy of sending a team of young people to a school to cover it in murals then leave, never to return. We’ve grown-up in our way of thinking and we now source projects which teams can return to each year, and where they can work alongside local people, or national parks to build sustainable projects and long-term relationships.
We are also linking with VentureCo Worldwide (Ecuador, Peru and Cambodia), UST (Iceland) and other organisations so that their volunteers can work on our projects during the out-of-season months and vice versa thus giving the host project some continuity.
