Good times in Ghana

West Africa has been a place with limited positive news recently, so it is lovely to be able to report that Ghana, one of our long term West Africa expedition destinations, is as lovely, friendly, safe and welcoming as it has always been!

Our Senior Expedition Manager Georgia recently spent a very fleeting four days in the capital city Accra. She came back with a very slight tan and full of reports of tasty Fan ice creams, spicy ginger biscuits, yummy jolof rice, sweltering heat and haggling in the markets.

Accra has been booming over the last few years with many new businesses and swanky hotels popping up near the airport, all signs that Ghana is doing very well. It has remained a safe and stable West African country and offers amazing opportunities for expedition teams, from thick jungle trekking in the Volta Region (ok, the highest peak is only a mere 800 metres, but the heat makes up for the height!), to lazy river cruises croc spotting, to unspoilt sandy beach resorts and real grass roots project work. It’s a superb taste of Africa in one lovely bundle!

Georgia went to Accra to meet a team of students who are based at a school in Abuja, Nigeria. Wilderness has been working with this school since 2013, providing them with the opportunity to achieve their Silver International Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The team were in extremely high spirits when she met them at the airport and their first night in country was a manic one with role assignment and expectation setting, as well as bag packing (they travelled to Accra with suitcases and had to decant their kit into rucksacks brought from the UK).

Wilderness Expertise really enjoys creating bespoke opportunities for clients from any school in any country! We cannot wait to hear how the Nigerian team get on (reports so far include tales of dancing and singing round bonfires under the stars!) and we are greatly looking forward to organising their next adventure.
