Secondary age students respond brilliantly to short, high-intensity challenges. You don’t need the cost and time constraints of a week away to get real value from being outdoors — our well-designed day of navigation exercises, team problem-solving, and physical challenge can deliver a huge impact in a short space of time.

For Year 7s, a day together early in the year is a great way to help a new tutor group bond, building peer relationships at exactly the point when it matters.  As it’s just one day, staff can slot it into the calendar without the headache of cover — making it easier to get sign-off and get it in the diary.

September and October are a great time to get teenagers outdoors:

• Cooler temperatures make activities like yoga, climbing, and team challenges far more comfortable than the height of summer heat.
• Changing scenery — the shift into autumn colour adds a sense of novelty and occasion that students will remember for years.

What a Day Visit Actually Looks Like

For staff who haven’t run one of these before, here’s a typical shape for the day:

• Arrival and briefing — students are welcomed on-site, safety briefed, and split into groups.
• Activity blocks — a mix of challenges tailored to your goals, whether that’s navigation and orienteering, yoga, team-building tasks, cooking over open fires, climbing, or problem-solving games.
• Debrief — time built in at the end of the day to reflect as a group, drawing out what was learned about teamwork, communication, and resilience.

Every visit is shaped around what your school actually wants to get out of the day, so every itinerary is unique.

Ticking the Boxes That Matter to Your School

An on site day isn’t just a nice break from the classroom — it’s easy to justify against your Ofsted report card. Since November 2025, schools are graded across several evaluation areas, and a Wilderness onsite day visit speaks directly to them:

• Personal development and wellbeing — one of the named evaluation areas on the report card, and outdoor learning is one of the clearest ways to generate visible evidence for it: resilience under challenge, confidence in unfamiliar situations, and a genuine break from screens and exam pressure.
