At Wilderness Expertise, we often say that our work isn’t just a job, it’s a calling. Every rucksack packed, route planned, and expedition delivered is more than logistics; it’s about shaping experiences, building resilience, and fostering a lifelong love for the outdoors in young people. And when we receive feedback like this, we’re reminded why we pour our hearts into every step of the journey.
“We outsourced our Bronze expedition for the first time this year and had an uptake of 155 students! The team at Wilderness Expertise went above and beyond to ensure that both our practice and assessed expeditions were a huge success. They really have demonstrated expertise at every stage of the expedition; planning, training, delivery and review. I have felt so supported as the school leader, and I know our students have benefited massively from the management structure that enables such an operation and the face to face encounters with their instructors. I couldn’t recommend using Wilderness Expertise for your DofE expeditions enough!”
This testimonial, from one of our fantastic partner schools, perfectly encapsulates what we strive to achieve – excellence at every stage, and a support structure that empowers both students and school leaders alike.
When schools choose to outsource their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expeditions to us, especially for the first time, we know it’s a decision that carries weight. There’s a trust placed in us to not only manage the practical elements, but to honour the values and spirit of the DofE Award itself.
So when 155 students signed up for a school’s Bronze expedition, we saw it as more than just a big number. It was 155 opportunities to inspire. 155 young people stepping into challenge, adventure, and discovery. And it was our job to guide them there.
From the very first meeting, we collaborate with schools to understand their unique needs, calendars, and students. Our expedition managers and coordinators work meticulously to design a seamless experience where every detail, from kit lists to campsite logistics, is accounted for.
We believe that the planning phase is where our “expertise” truly begins.
It’s not just about walking with a map and compass, though those skills are certainly vital. Our training sessions are about building confidence, communication, leadership, and trust.
We love watching groups start off hesitantly, perhaps unsure of their roles or their route. But after a few hours (and maybe a few missteps!), something clicks. And suddenly they’re navigating, cooperating, problem-solving – becoming their own expedition leaders.
That transformation never gets old.
One of the most powerful parts of this feedback is the mention of “face to face encounters with their instructors.” We take great pride in our team; not just for their technical qualifications, but for their warmth, humour, and ability to connect with young people.
Our instructors aren’t just there to supervise. They listen, encourage, advise, and sometimes simply share a laugh during a rest stop. That human connection is what makes an expedition memorable, and what helps students grow in ways that last far beyond the final checkpoint.
We know that leading a school’s DofE programme comes with its own pressures. That’s why we put just as much effort into supporting teachers and leaders as we do the students.
As our partner said: “I have felt so supported as the school leader.” That’s exactly how it should be. We want schools to feel confident, relaxed, and proud of what their students are achieving, knowing that we’ve got their back, every step of the way.
When the tents are packed away and the boots are muddied and tired, the success of an expedition isn’t just measured in miles walked. It’s in the smiles, the new friendships, the stories students take home, and the quiet pride they carry in their own growth.
That’s why we do what we do. And that’s why we love it.
So, to every student who braved the elements, every teacher who trusted us, and every school that partnered with us for the first time this year — thank you. You make our work meaningful, and your success is our greatest reward.
